I learned that Jeannie Baker’s book Window uses pictures to demonstrate her perspectives about the changes that each generation brings to the environment. In her video conference she told us that she deliberately did not want to talk about the environment with words because it would be too boring and preachy – so she worked to bring about change through images and in our hearts instead.

Good day, Devoe here. I had a good experience in doing this Belonging rap. I liked the rap because it gave me a different side of Belonging and a different perspective in understanding Belonging. I liked the book Belonging because of the life that was lived in it and I could see how change and Belonging can be linked.

Hallo – Lasi here. For me a real highlight was Jeannie Baker’s video conference. I loved her description of her books and what inspired her. During this rap, I also learned about how Belonging is represented in art works – this was an added bonus!! It was great!

I have learned that there is a lot more than you think in an image. For example, in the books Belonging and Window, each page has a large amount of techniques – which makes the texts very interesting.
Cheers

Enrique here – I experienced how to decipher a book or visual text much more appropriately than before. There are also a lot more layers than the subject you first see. Requiem for a beast had so much going on in it – I found the authors online section useful to hear Matt Ottley’s ideas.

Good day – it’s Ramendra here – the Flying Fijian! I have learned about techniques authors use to get ideas through. Eg How to look for colours and tie them in to the themes and tone of a book to pick up its message.

Hello everyone,
I have learned how belonging and alienation can be displayed using formats like visual texts – not just through words – in fact they work together. I also now have a better understanding of different types of Belonging and I liked reading the authors online section.

Hello – Felicity here. I have learned more about Belonging and Not Belonging. I have also experienced how to analyse more texts and other related material and how to look at texts and their meanings with more depth. I have also gained a lots of viewpoints of other people, which has been helpful. Thanks very much.

Through the rap, I have now discovered a better and further understanding of the concept of Belonging and to look further and deeper into a picture to find its underlying meaning. I also liked the way in which the online authors made the links between their words and images.

Hi everyone, Brook here.
I have learned to unpack and analyse graphic novels and picture books. I have experienced ideas and thoughts authors might have been going through. Something I thought was just a picture now I understand is a story…

Jerome here. I have learned that Belonging encompasses all aspects of life. Belonging is also viewed differently by everyone. While one person prefers one such thing, another person prefers something else. In short, Belonging is an aspect of life that helps people to understand life.

I have learned and experienced various aspects of Belonging and how it can be shown in different ways. I also learned to look behind the obvious to further understand the concept of Belonging.

What a treat it has been to be involved in this Belonging rap. From start to finish there has been such a wonderful range of personal thoughts, ideas and comments. Students, teachers and authors who have taken the time to engage in the online dialogue are to be commended. What a terrific community of learning!
Many thanks to all.
